After recovering from the wolf attack the group spends some time in town shopping and due to the overwhelming generosity of Franklin, they now have a mule and cart to help get around! This should speed up travel times marginally! Not to mention haul any cursed items… err TREASURES, that they happen to find.
Everyone gathered up in the town square to find an angry mob of farmers and townsfolk gathering and being rallied to action by a fat nobleman by the name of Vingel Hoskar. Steward Brannet attempted to calm the situation by assuring everyone that adventurers have been hired to take care of the hostile flora issue, but Hoskar insults the ability of the group by pointing out how they had to run back to heal from a wolf attack.
He almost succeeds in whipping the crowd into a pitchfork and torch frenzy before Sicarion reveals himself as Alaric, Cleric of Storms! Setting the ground to trembling, the skies to thundering, he speaks over the fat nobleman and the angry mob with a divine booming voice. He warns them not to interfere as it would result in unnecessary bloodshed on their part and that they would indeed take care of this problem for them. The crowd quieted after that awesome display. Hoskar seemed to be taken aback as well, but quickly reasserted that he intends to take back the forest en masse and gave the group of adventurers a 48 hour window to get it done and bring back proof of their success, after which, the mob is coming to bring the forest down.
Then a mysterious elf clad in leather, a shortsword and dagger sheathed at her hips and a shortbow clasped at her back stepped forward from Hoskar’s entourage. Introducing herself as Esgal, she offered her services to the party to help ensure their success. After a brief round of introductions they then set off to the southern farms at the forest’s edge!
Upon arriving at the farm, they enter an eerily quiet scene of abandoned houses and overgrown fields. Vines have almost encased the houses entirely. Franklin quickly goes about casting a Detect Magic ritual and sees the faint aura of magic permeating the root system and all of the vines and shrubs that are nearby. He can see the aura stretching back into the forest. Alaric and Esgal investigate the inside of one of the houses that didn’t have it’s door shut in with vines. Upon entering one of the back rooms, they saw vines formed into a vaguely humanoid shape. When it sensed their presence, it sprang up and attacked them. That’s when all hell broke loose as the entire farm rose up to kill the party!
It was a hard fought battle. Alaric unleashed the fury of the storm. Franklin spammed magic missiles and firebolts. Glittersox forewent her light crossbow and wielded her handaxes to chop down the foes. Faen was a flurry of fists and kicks. And Esgal proved herself to be a highly dexterous and sneaky rogue. After bringing down several of the evil plants, they just kept coming. Faen and Esgal fell unconscious while being grappled in vines and Alaric nearly fell after taking several needle attacks , but kept on fighting after downing a wisely purchased healing potion.
When the battle was finally won and everyone brought back to consciousness after taking refuge in the house, they had precious few minutes to catch their breaths before hearing the ungodly noise of stomping monstrosities. One look outside the window and they could hardly believe what they were seeing. The trees of the forest were moving… and they were coming straight for the beleaguered and spent party of heroes!
Do they have enough left in them to take on this new set of foes?! Or will Hoskar be proven right in his assessment of these adventurers?
